Services scheduled for couple killed in crash with fleeing driver
Apr 16, 2018A funeral Mass for Juan Rene Muniz, 66, and Mary Hernandez Muniz, 62, both of Kalamazoo, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, March 26, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 Lake St.Monsignor Michael Hazard will officiate.Members of the Muniz family will receive visitors from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at the Westside Chapel of Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 3926 S. 9th St. Cremation will follow the funeral service.The Muniz were fatally injured when their car was struck by a speeding pickup truck shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on Portage Street at Crosstown Parkway.Police say the couple was trying to make a left turn from southbound Portage Street onto eastbound Crosstown Parkway when they were struck by a truck driven by Thomas Vyverman, 56, of Kalamazoo.Kalamazoo Public Safety officers say Vyverman was a motorist officers tried to stop a short time earlier after receiving a report of a man in a gray truck armed with a gun. They say a patrol officer on foot tried to make contact with Vyverman in the 1500 block of Washington Avenue. But the truck sped away from him as well as a patrol car at Portage Street near Stockbridge Avenue.Officers say they quit the chase at Portage Street and Washington Avenue as the truck fled north on Portage Street at a high rate of speed. The truck crashed into the Muniz's Chevrolet Malibu about a half-mile later and the driver fled on foot. Officers said he was found and arrested a short time later.Vyverman was arraigned on Thursday, March 22, in Kalamazoo County District Court on two counts of operating under the influence causing death, two counts of first-degree fleeing a police officer, and one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer.At probable cause hearing Thursday, a Kalamazoo Public Safety detective testified that a post-arrest blood draw indicated that Vyverman had a blood-alcohol content of 0.21 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.Vyverman told Judge Richa...
